Rivian, Mercedes plans to build Electric Vans

Mercedes-Benz and EV startup Rivian Automotive have announced a collaboration to produce a line of electric vans.

The companies intend to establish a joint venture factory in Europe to produce large electric vans under the Mercedes-Benz and Rivian brands, subject to further negotiations and regulatory approval. According to a joint press release, the factory will be operational “in a few years.”

Last week, Mercedes-Benz and Rivian signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the partnership. The financial details were not disclosed.

The OEMs stated that they will “pursue operational synergies to rapidly scale electric van production” and will look for ways to leverage shared investments and costs. They stated that they would look into other opportunities that may arise as a result of the joint venture.

“Rivian was founded to encourage the world to transition away from the use of fossil fuels by developing compelling products and services.” “We’re thrilled to be collaborating with Mercedes-Benz on this project,” Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said in a statement. “Mercedes-Benz is one of the world’s most well-known and respected automotive companies, and we believe that working together, we will produce truly remarkable electric vans that will benefit not only our customers, but the planet as well.”

According to the company, the joint venture supports Mercedes-intention Benz’s to build all of its mid-size and large vans on EV platforms beginning in 2025.

“Since 2010, Mercedes-Benz Vans has gained extensive experience in producing and launching eVans as a pioneer in the field of locally emission-free transportation.” “We are now accelerating the transition to a fully electric product portfolio,” said Mercedes-Benz Vans Head Mathias Geisen. “I am thrilled that, as part of this transformation, we are now collaborating with Rivian, a highly dynamic and inspiring partner with a strong technological position.” We are sharing investments and technology because we share the same strategic goal: to accelerate the electrification of the van market while providing our customers with sustainable and superior products.”
