The Public Transportation System Completes Plans for the Rivian Bus Route.

Following action by the Connect Transit Board of Trustees on Tuesday, Bloomington-public Normal’s transportation system will launch a new west side route serving the local Rivian plant on October 2. According to Connect Transit staff, it will be called the Cobalt Line because Rivian is one of the first electric vehicle manufacturers to not use cobalt in their batteries. The new U-shaped route from Uptown Normal to the Rivian plant, then east to Downtown Bloomington, was approved by trustees. According to Connect Transit Board President Ryan Whitehouse, the bus will make several stops along West College Avenue and West Market Street, providing service to the west side Walmart and OSF PromptCare on Rivian Motorway. During peak hours, buses will run every 30 minutes, seven days a week. Connect Transit is eliminating the Lime Line, which served a smaller portion of the west side, to help pay for the new service. The increased service will cost nearly $650,000, with the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Downstate Operation Program covering 65% of the cost. According to the general manager’s report, the remaining funds will come from local Connect Transit funds and federal grants. To encourage people to try the new service, Connect Transit will not charge fares on the Cobalt Line for the first month.
