Rivian’s Driver+ Active Driving Assistance in action

A video has surfaced on the internet demoing Rivians Driver+ active driving assistance feature in action. The video which was posted on the Rivian community by Reddit user krtrice showed a driver activating the hands-free driver assistance feature for the Rivian truck.

Though the video was short and not a whole lot to take from it, we can observe a few things in the video.

It’s a Hands-free driver assistance feature. Not surprising as the interior photos have shown a camera near the rear-view mirror for some time, and news about the availability of some sort of autonomous driving feature which will be a kind of cruise control feature will be present at launch of the R1T truck and the R1S SUV.

The feature is Stalk-activated just like in a Tesla. We also see that the screen behind the wheel is displaying traffic in front of the truck.

There are no visible UI changes after the driver activates the hands-free driver assistance feature. Neither on the main screen nor the ‘instrument cluster screen. Perhaps this is still in the early days of integration with the software.

Driver+ as Rivian calls its handsfree driving assistance feature will automatically steer, adjust speed, and change lanes on command. We are not sure how many of these tasks it is currently able to achieve on its own.

The capabilities of the system that Rivian describes suggests it is a Level 2 autonomous driving system which means the system can perform two or more parts of the driving task under the supervision of the driver.

Rivian has a robust suite of hardware that exceeds what Tesla uses for its driver assistance system including 12 ultrasonic sensors, 10 exterior cameras, five radars, and high-precision GPS. This essentially gives the vehicle 360-camera and radar visibility. The hardware suite is similar to GM’s hands-free Super Cruise system, with the exception that Rivian appears to have more cameras.

This is s step in the right direction and we hope to see more effort in Rivian’s autonomous driving endeavors for its production cars.
